What to Check If Your Car Is Overheating

by | Jan 27, 2017 | Automotive

Overheating is one of the top contributors to premature engine failure, so you should always treat it seriously. Just a single serious overheating incident can cause you to blow a head gasket, or worse, crack the block or head. If your car is overheating, then there are a few things you should check before taking it to an auto repair shop in Brighton Park.

Water Pump

The water pump is one of the most important parts when it comes to regulating your car’s engine temperature. The water pump is usually easy to diagnose since most have what is called a “weep hole.” This is a hole in the water pump that will leak if it has failed. If you see water or rust coming from this hole, then your water pump needs to be replaced.

Fans

Most modern cars use only electric fans. This is easy enough to test, you can either short the fans or let the engine idle until they come on. If the fans do not come on, then there is not air flow at idle. If the fan is the culprit, then you will usually only have issues while sitting still, like in traffic.

Check the Thermostat

These are usually easy to replace and only cost a few dollars. The price will vary depending on your car, but expect to spend less than $20 for a high-end part. This should be the first thing you replace if the water pump and fans are good. The thermostat is what regulates water flow between the engine and radiator where it is cooled. If your thermostat fails, then either water cannot flow between them, or it cannot stop flowing between them. In either of these situations, however, the result is the same and the engine overheats.

Before you take your car to the shop check these basic things, it could save you a good deal of money. If it is none of these, or you are not comfortable performing repairs on your car, then you should take it to a professional.
